Sleep Hygiene: Setting the Stage for Rest
Good sleep rarely happens by accident. Small, consistent habits make falling and staying asleep far easier.
‘Sleep hygiene’ is the set of daily habits and environmental factors that support quality rest. You cannot force sleep, but you can create the conditions that let it come naturally — and most of those conditions are within your control.
The environment
- Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet — a slightly cool room helps most people sleep.
- Block light with curtains or an eye mask; even small amounts can disrupt rest.
- Reserve the bed for sleep so your brain links it with rest, not work or scrolling.
- Try a fan or white noise if your space is noisy.
The rhythm
Going to bed and waking up at roughly the same times — including weekends — trains your internal clock, so you feel sleepy and alert at predictable hours. Morning light exposure reinforces this rhythm and makes the evening wind-down easier.
You will not get every habit perfect, and that is fine. Pick one or two changes, give them a couple of weeks, and notice what shifts.
