Strength Training Basics for Every Body
Building strength is one of the most valuable things you can do for lifelong health — and it is more approachable than it looks.
Strength training simply means asking your muscles to work against resistance — whether that is dumbbells, resistance bands, or your own body weight. Beyond looking and feeling stronger, it supports your bones, metabolism, balance, and independence as you age.
Where to begin
You do not need a gym or fancy equipment to start. A handful of basic movements, done consistently, covers most of what a beginner needs. Focus on good form first and add resistance gradually as the movements feel easier.
- Push: push-ups (against a wall or the floor) or an overhead press.
- Pull: rows with a band or dumbbells.
- Legs: squats and sit-to-stands from a chair.
- Core: planks and gentle bridges.
Progress slowly
Aim for two or three short sessions a week, with rest days in between. Add a little weight or a few reps when the current level feels manageable. Strength builds steadily over months, and consistency matters far more than intensity in any single session.
