Breathing Techniques to Calm Stress

Your breath is a built-in tool for calming your nervous system — always available, and completely free.

When you feel stressed, your breathing tends to become shallow and quick, which signals your body to stay on high alert. The reverse is also true: by deliberately slowing and deepening your breath, you can nudge your nervous system toward calm. It is one of the few automatic functions you can consciously steer.

A few simple techniques

The longer exhale is the key ingredient. Making your out-breath longer than your in-breath is what signals your body to relax.

Use it in real moments

The value of breathing practice is that you can use it anywhere — before a difficult conversation, in traffic, or when you notice tension building. A single minute of slow breathing can take the edge off. Practiced regularly, it becomes a reliable reset you can reach for whenever stress rises.
